SDM Full Form – Sub Divisional Magistrate

The full form of SDM is Sub-Divisional Magistrate. Generally the subdivisions are formed by dividing the districts and is controlled by the SDM. An SDM may be a senior state government civil services with relevant work experience in subordinate roles or a junior member of the Indian Administrative Service.

SDM conducts various magisterial tasks under the 1973 criminal procedure code and many other minor acts. It is a PCS Ranking Officer and is authorized by Collector magistrate.  Tax inspector and all tehsils or subdivisions works under the control of  Sub-divisional Magistrate (SDM).

What is SDM

SDM is an important officer, who is mainly responsible for the administration, development, judiciary of his district. In addition of this, he is also responsible for the maintenance of law and order, release of tear gas missiles, imposition of curfew and legal actions. How to become SDM?

The SDM post is one of the supreme and most important posts in the state administrative service. Every state conducts an examination for the selection of SDM in their administrative services. There are two ways to be SDM or get SDM post, which are as follows:

  1. Union Public Service Commission (UPSC)
  2. State Public Service Commission Officers (State PSC)

Union Public Service Commission (UPSC)

The first way to become an SDM officer is by passing the UPSC exam with good score. To write this exam, you must first complete your graduation degree in any subject. After passing the UPSC exam, the IAS officer will initially be assigned the position of SDM.

State Public Service Commission Officers (State PSC)

The another or 2nd way to become an SDM is by passing the state PSC exam. First,  you should have completed your graduation degree in any subjects to take this exam.  if you get a good score in this state PSC exam then you can become an SDM right after your training.

What is the age limit to become SDM?

There is a different age limit for different categories to become SDM which is as given below.

  • General  – 21 to 35 years
  • OBC – 21 to 40 years
  • SC/ST  – 21 to 45 years
